Title:
Who's Pragmatist: Royce and Peirce at the Turn of the Century
Journal:
Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society
Keywords:
Pragmatism, Pragmaticism, Josiah Royce, Sami Pihlström
Abstract:
The article examines the pragmatic views of philosopher Josiah Royce and physicist Charles Peirce. Peirce views that pragmaticism is not a system of philosophy but a method of thinking. In the book "The Religious Aspect of Philosophy," Royce argues that inquiry could not be conducted in the absence of an absolute judge. Essayist Sami Pihlström maintains that Royce developed a combination of pragmatism and Hegelian idealism that was closer to Peirce's views.
