Title:
The Inner Chambers of his Mind: Peirce's "Neglected Argument" for God as Related to Mathematical Experience
Journal:
Transactions of the Charles S. Peirce Society
Keywords:
God, Mathematical Reasoning, Infinity, Continuity, Continuum
Abstract:
The article explores the extent to which mathematician Charles Peirce's essay "A Neglected Argument for the Reality of God" might be a kind of mathematical argument and its implications for understanding his idea on the meaning of a belief in the Being of God. It suggests that the mathematical concepts of infinity and the continuum may have significant roles in his theory of religious reasoning and experience. The essay can be read as an invitation to use creative mathematical reasoning to arrive at the idea or ideal of God.
